Geoff Smith, executive chair of EllisDon Corporation’s Board of Directors, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Toronto Region Builder Award. This prestigious honor recognizes his lifelong contributions to EllisDon, its employees, the construction industry, and the broader Toronto community through exemplary leadership and impact.

Established in 2013, the Toronto Region Builder Award acknowledges individuals whose leadership and volunteerism significantly improve the region, making it a better place to live, work, and learn. Past recipients include renowned figures such as Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, Susan McIsaac, and Larry Tanenbaum.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” Smith said. “For over seven decades, EllisDon has been privileged to contribute to Toronto’s skyline, infrastructure, and its cultural and charitable institutions. This recognition reflects the incredible people at EllisDon who have shared a vision of progress, innovation, and community-building. We hope our work has had a positive impact on this great city, and we look forward to continuing our efforts for many years to come.”

Smith joined EllisDon in 1981, following in the footsteps of his father, Don Smith, who founded the company in 1951. Appointed President and CEO in 1996, he instilled a culture of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, propelling EllisDon to a leadership position in the construction industry. One of his landmark achievements was establishing EllisDon’s employee ownership program, which ensures that 100% of the company’s equity will eventually transfer to its employees, fostering long-term success and innovation.

“Geoff Smith exemplifies what it means to be a builder – both in business and in the community,” said Giles Gherson, President & CEO of the Toronto Region Board of Trade. “His bold leadership and commitment to transforming the region’s infrastructure have left an indelible mark on Toronto. Geoff’s vision has inspired progress and continues to shape the city’s future, and we are proud to honor him as the 2025 Region Builder.”

Smith will receive the award at the Toronto Region Board of Trade’s 135th Annual Dinner on February 27th at the Toronto Convention Centre. The event, themed “Dare to Lead,” will bring together more than 1,000 influential business leaders. Speakers include Teresa Resch, President of the WNBA Toronto; Blake Hutcheson, CEO of OMERS; and Greta Cutulenco, CEO & Co-Founder of Acerta.
