Reilly’s Roofing Ltd., a Georgian Bluffs roofing contractor, and company director Adam Reilly have been fined after a worker was critically injured in a ladder fall at a residential construction project.
Following guilty pleas in the Provincial Offences Court in Guelph on June 3, Reilly’s Roofing was fined $130,000 and Adam Reilly was fined $15,000. The court also imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge.
The court hear that on Dec. 22, 2023, workers employed by Reilly’s Roofing attended a project to install shingles on a single-storey home. To access the roof, a worker climbed a ladder set on frozen, uneven ground and unsecured at both the top and bottom. At the time of the incident, the worker had no fall protection, and no fall protection system was in place. As the worker stepped from the ladder onto the roof, the ladder twisted, causing the worker to fall about 11 feet to the ground and suffer critical injuries.
A Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development investigation found that required fall protection measures were not in place.
