The Government of Canada has announced more than $97 million in grants and low-cost loans through its Affordable Housing Fund to build and repair about 8,700 affordable homes in Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions.
Funding will help create a total of 270 new homes and lead to the repairs of 8,399 others, including a project at 106 Bay St. N. in Hamilton which will receive $5 million to build 55 housing units for women and their children.
Construction is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“Everyone deserves a place to call their own and the Affordable Housing Fund is one way we’re helping make that a reality for Canadians,” said Housing Minister Sean Fraser. “We will keep investing in affordable housing projects like the ones announced today, and working with partners across the country, to end the housing crisis.”
The Affordable Housing Fund provides funding through low-interest and/or forgivable loans or contributions to help build new affordable homes and renovate and repair existing, affordable and community housing.
Also this week, $35 million was allocated to 360 affordable homes in the regions of Bas-Saint-Laurent, Québec, Mauricie and Lanaudière.
One of the projects, Résidence L’Entre Gens, located at 6 L’Entre Gens in Saint-Ulric, received $1.1 million to build 22 new homes that will be operated by Comité L’Entre for low- and moderate-income seniors. The building features communal spaces, such as a dining room, a lounge, and a kitchen. Meals are also provided twice a day for the residents.
