HDR, in partnership with GEI Consultants, has been awarded the contract to lead detailed design and contract administration for the City of Mississauga’s Lakeshore Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
The Lakeshore BRT will cover a 2-kilometre stretch along Lakeshore Road from East Avenue to Etobicoke Creek, a part of southeast Mississauga where major redevelopment is underway, including the Lakeview Village site. City officials say the project is a priority investment to support population and employment growth, improve transit capacity and strengthen access to the waterfront.
The corridor will be rebuilt as a complete street, with a widened roadway, centre-running bus lanes, weather-protected stations and multimodal features such as new cycle tracks and sidewalks. Utilities will be strategically re-engineered to accommodate future development and ensure long-term service capacity.
HDR’s role will extend across the next major project stage. The scope includes detailed design, tendering and procurement support, and contract administration and inspection during construction. GEI Consultants will provide additional expertise to support delivery.
The firm is already familiar with the corridor, having previously completed the environmental assessment and conceptual design for the BRT as well as a transportation master plan for the project area. That experience, the city says, will help streamline the transition into detailed design and accelerate progress on the project.
“The Lakeshore corridor will experience significant growth in the coming years with several developments reshaping southeast Mississauga,” said Sam Rogers, commissioner of transportation and works. “The City looks forward to continuing its work with HDR to move this priority project forward and help make the beautiful waterfront area more accessible for all.”
For HDR, the latest contract is another step in a long involvement with Mississauga’s transit expansion plans.
“The Lakeshore BRT is a key part of Mississauga’s ongoing investments to improve the community’s public transportation capabilities,” said Cristian Huma, HDR’s project director. “Our team has been involved for over 10 years within the Lakeshore corridor and it’s exciting to see that our work will continue to carry this vision forward.”
The Lakeshore BRT is one of several rapid transit projects planned across Mississauga, forming part of a broader strategy to improve regional connectivity and build transit-supportive communities along the waterfront.
