Housing Durham will hold a drop-in open house later this month to provide updates and gather community feedback on the planned redevelopment of its Malaga Road property in Oshawa.
The session will take place Wednesday, May 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the South Oshawa Community Centre, located at 1455 Cedar Street. Residents, business owners and other community members are invited to attend to learn more about the proposal, ask questions and review how the project is advancing.
The redevelopment is part of a broader initiative approved by Durham Regional Council in 2022, when it passed a resolution identifying Housing Durham properties for revitalization. The program aims to expand affordable housing supply while creating mixed-income communities that include both rent-geared-to-income and market rental homes.
According to the Region of Durham, the approach is intended to deliver more high-quality affordable housing while supporting the creation of vibrant, diverse and healthy neighbourhoods. It also aims to provide a range of housing options for different needs, modernized building stock, improved sustainability features and stronger community connections.
The Malaga Road site, located on 4.7 acres at the corner of Oxford Street and Malaga Road in Oshawa, is currently home to 65 townhouse units that will be replaced. The property is near Cordova Valley Park and Community Centre, and within walking distance of the Oshawa Creek and the Joseph Kolodzie Bike Trail.
The proposed redevelopment would replace the existing housing with approximately 439 new units across two mid-rise apartment buildings and stacked and back-to-back townhouses. Unit sizes would range from one to four bedrooms, and the design includes a mix of housing types, indoor and outdoor amenity spaces, universal accessibility features and upgraded environmental performance standards.
An official plan amendment and site plan approval from the City of Oshawa will be required before construction can proceed. If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2028.
