Here are some of DataBid.com’s top project opportunities for the week ending Nov. 9. Ontario Construction News provides a daily update of current opportunities for all registered subscribers at www.ontarioconstructionnews.com/databid.

Southern Ontario

Sheppard Ave. West Microhotel

Location: North York-area

Stage: Design planning

The site of this project has a history associated with diplomatic conflict, terrorism and international litigation intrigue – as it had previously been owned by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

DataBid.com reports that Realtel Management Corp. is the owner of the hotel project planned for 290 Sheppard Ave. W. VFA Architecture & Design is designing the six-storey, 38-unit structure to replace an empty single family home on the site.

The Hamilton Spectator reported in 2016 that the run-down house and lot currently on the site — as well as another empty property in Ottawa and two bank accounts — were owned by the Iranian government. A  Toronto judge dismissed the country’s arguments of state immunity from seizure of property and ordered that the assets be turned over to American victims of Iran-sponsored terrorism who have won cases against the nation in U.S. courts.

Federal legislation allows for victims of state-sponsored terrorism from other countries, and their families, to ask Canadian courts to seize Iranian assets here if they can prove their case.

The Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act, enacted under the former Conservative government, currently lists Iran and Syria as state sponsors of terrorism.
