Joint inquest announced for four construction site deaths from falls

The Toronto East regional supervising coroner has announced a joint inquest into the deaths of construction workers Athanasios Batsos, James Pearce, Nikolaos Psihopedas and Ferdinand Staffa will begin Mon., Oct. 17.

Batsos, 53, died Sept. 30, 2017; Pearce, 50 and Staffa, 82, died Aug. 11, 2018; Psihopedas, 70, died June 6, 2018; from multiple injuries sustained after a fall from height at various construction sites in Toronto and Vaughan. An inquest into their deaths is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding these deaths and the jury is expected to make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths from occurring in similar circumstances.

The inquest is scheduled to last four days and hear from three witnesses.

It will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 17 via video conference with Dr. John Carlisle as the presiding officer and Roger Shallow the inquest counsel.
