Mental health in construction focus of Barrie seminar and trade show

BARRIE – The Barrie Regional Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee is hosting a mental health seminar and trade show this month aimed at helping construction employers better support workers on and off the job.

The half-day event is scheduled for April 14 at the Peggy Hill Team Community Centre and will bring together industry experts, labour representatives and community organizations to address psychological health and safety in the construction sector.

Organizers say the session will focus on practical strategies and industry-leading approaches to creating workplaces that promote positive mental health — an issue gaining increasing attention across the industry.

The agenda includes a presentation by Jennifer Prendegast on supporting neurodiverse workers in the trades, as well as a session on accommodating mental health and substance dependence led by Allyson Lee.

An expert panel will also explore how unions, employers and the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association are leveraging resources and the Internal Responsibility System to strengthen mental health supports in the workplace.

In addition to the presentations, the event will feature a community partner trade show and raffle.

Proceeds from ticket sales will support Threads of Life, the Busby Centre and the Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie.
