Judges selected the $62 million Guildwood Station infrastructure project for Metrolinx as the 2019 Ontario Concrete Awards Project of the Year. The project, among 10 winners honoured last Wednesday at a Buildings Show dinner in Toronto, will be Concrete Ontario’s entry in the 2020 American Concrete Institute (ACI)’s awards competition.
Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. was the general contractor, designed by RHDA. WSP, which submitted the nomination, was the engineer of record.
The project citation observed that the redevelopment project required both cast-in place and precast concrete for extensive construction. It was recognized as the finalist in the Infrastructure category.
The redesigned station opened on June 19, following a lengthy process — design started in February 2014 and construction commenced in January 2016.
Among other features, the station’s “two 315m-long platforms were constructed using precast curb (standard Metrolinx design) and involved overnight and weekend installation of 2,150 precast curb sections to frame the platforms,” the award entry says. “On the platforms, cast-in-place concrete was utilized for the foundation of the platform shelters, canopy footings and walls for the elevators and stairs leading to the platforms.”
