Mississauga Council has approved a motion to establish a temporary Hyperscale Data Centre Task Force as the city reviews its policies and regulations governing major digital infrastructure facilities.
The task force follows Council’s approval of an Interim Control By-law on Sept. 16 that paused the processing of new and existing applications for major digital infrastructure facilities for up to one year.
The pause allows city staff to undertake a comprehensive review of planning policies, zoning regulations and development approval processes related to data centres.
The proposed task force will provide a forum for regular updates and stakeholder input during the review. It will include members of Council, city planning staff, industry stakeholders and citizen members.
Members will receive updates on the city’s review and have opportunities to provide feedback. The task force is also intended to support public transparency and reporting throughout the process.
Any recommendations resulting from the review will be brought to Council for consideration. The task force will be dissolved once the review is complete and Council has considered the recommendations.
The interim control by-law applies to major digital infrastructure facilities while the review is underway.
