NCA shines spotlight on construction safety culture with 4th Annual Niagara Safety Awareness Day

The Niagara Construction Association (NCA) is holding its fourth annual Niagara Safety Awareness Day today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The three-hour event devoted to safety in the construction industry has moved offsite, to the Grantham Lions Club (Niagara Street, St. Catharines) to accommodate its increase in size over the past four years. Admission is free.

This year’s event will feature upwards of 20 exhibitors covering all areas of safety – products, suppliers, services, expertise, training /certification (WHMIS, GoldSeal, COR).
Also featured is an expanded schedule of demonstrations and information overviews including the following: First Aid re-enactments (ladder fall, fainting/CPR/AED, anaphylaxis episode), Working at Heights harness demo and safety, fall protection, rescue demo, reversing alarm technology, dump box warning systems, dropped object safety, cyber safety, wellness/injury prevention, surety, and financial safety.

Exhibitors to date include: Trillium Industrial Safety Inc., DiCAN Digital Instruments Canada Inc., Fastek, 3M Safety, Hespro, League of Champions Construction Safety / Ontario General Contractors Association, the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association (IHSA), JobGym, FirstOntario Credit Union, Timbro, Jones DesLauriers Insurance Management Inc., Tenaquip, Advanced Chiropractic Clinic, Niagara Region Public Health, CrimeStoppers and Canadian Blood Services.

At the 2018 Safety Awareness Day, the NCA launched the P.A.T.H.S. initiative – Partners Aligned Together in Health & Safety. “At the core of PATHS is the recognition that safety is not “anyone’s” responsibility, but a collective partnership with all workplace parties,” a NCA statement says. “Our partners are aligned, together, to elevate safety awareness in their companies while developing, upholding and sharing in a collective safe workplace. This year’s expanded Safety Awareness Day is just one way in which the NCA is demonstrating their safety commitment.”

The association says the 2018 event, featuring a keynote on the League of Champions safety initiative, was well attended, as seen in this short YourTV Niagara video.

“We’ve made safety a top priority here at the NCA and are thrilled to intensify our industry’s safety culture at every opportunity, including this awareness-raising community event,” said NCA general manager Karin Sheldrick.

This year’s sponsors include: YourTV Niagara, GoGo Canadiana Food Co., Jones DesLauriers Insurance Management Inc., Advantage Flooring, DiCAN, Modern Disposal Services, Merit Contractors Niagara, Cotton Inc., FirstOntario Credit Union, Falcon Crane, Niacon, 2M Architects, Verhoef Electric Inc., Trillium Industrial Safety Inc. and BuildForce Canada.
