A major rental housing development at 26 Grove St. W. in Barrie is nearing completion, with the launch of its final phase set to add 365 purpose-built rental homes to the city’s housing supply.
Tower B is nearing completion and construction of Tower C is getting underway.
Once all three towers are complete, the development will provide 930 rental homes, including affordable housing supported through the City’s Development Charge Deferral Program.
Tower C will include 73 affordable rental homes among its 365 units.
The project is also expected to create additional capacity within Simcoe County’s subsidized housing system. Under an agreement with the County, up to 32 households currently living in subsidized housing will have the opportunity to move into new affordable units at the development as they become available.
“This is what strong partnerships look like,” Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall said. “The city is working to create the conditions for more housing.
“SkyDev is delivering new affordable rental opportunities. And the County is helping ensure these homes create the greatest possible impact for residents across our community.”
The development comes as Barrie continues to experience population growth and increased demand for rental housing.
City council has identified expanding the supply of rental and affordable housing as a key priority.
