Newmarket to hold public consultation on Cane Parkway reconstruction project

Ontario Construction News staff writer

The Town of Newmarket is inviting residents to an upcoming public consultation centre to learn more about planned infrastructure upgrades to Cane Parkway, a corridor the municipality says is reaching the end of its useful life.

A second public consultation for the Beswick Drive Watermain Replacement and Road Reconstruction Project will be held at the same time and location.

Information on that project is available at HeyNewmarket.ca/Beswick.

newmarket 2Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 and is expected to be completed by summer 2028.

The project includes full underground and surface reconstruction work along the roadway. Planned improvements include replacement of the watermain, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems, along with a full road rebuild and new asphalt paving.

Additional work includes lane reconfiguration to improve traffic flow and better accommodate parking needs, as well as new street lighting and parking lot enhancements.

The town also plans to introduce several active transportation and safety upgrades, including a new multi-use path (MUP) on the east side of Cane Parkway connecting to the Mulock MUP and the Tom Taylor Trail, and a new sidewalk on the west side adjacent to Dennis Park. A pedestrian refuge island is also planned across from Dennis Park to improve crossing safety.

newmarket 3Stormwater management improvements will include the installation of Low Impact Development (LID) features. The project will also retain existing centre median islands where feasible and include new tree plantings to enhance Newmarket’s urban tree canopy.

Residents are being encouraged to attend a drop-in public consultation centre on Wednesday, April 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Municipal Offices, 395 Mulock Dr., in the Cane Rooms.

Representatives from the town’s Engineering Services department and consulting engineers Ainley will be on hand to answer questions and gather feedback.

Project boards will also be posted on the town’s website following the meeting.
