Ontario selling surplus land for new Francophone long-term care campus in Aurora

AURORA — The Ontario government says it will sell surplus provincial land in Aurora to support the construction of a new Francophone long-term care campus.

The site will be developed into Communauté du Trille blanc – Aurora, a multi-purpose campus that includes a 160-bed long-term care home, housing and recreational space.

“As our province continues to age, it is critical we protect Ontario and our seniors by building the long-term care needed to meet increasing demand,” Long-Term Care Minister Natalia Kusendova-Bashta said in a statement Thursday. “When the Aurora site is fully developed, 160 long-term care residents will have a modern and comfortable place to call home.”

The project is being advanced through the province’s Surplus Lands Program, which allows unneeded government land to be repurposed for housing, health care and other community needs.

Francophone Affairs Minister Caroline Mulroney said the new facility will allow seniors to live and receive care in French.

“Our government is protecting Ontario’s seniors by ensuring they receive the care they deserve — in the language of their choice and in a way that honours their culture and identity,” she said.

Communauté du Trille blanc, the not-for-profit organization leading the project, said its broader site proposal envisions a “French village” campus of care with housing, a French language hub, five acres of recreational space and a continuum of health and community services.

“This milestone marks an exciting new chapter for our Francophone community,” said board chair Jean Bouchard. “The Communauté du Trille blanc will be more than a long-term care home; it will be a vibrant hub where seniors, families and community members can live, connect and celebrate our language and culture.”
