The Ontario government is moving ahead with plans to extend the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton and Mississauga, including a tunnel beneath Brampton’s core. The new underground section will connect the transit line to the heart of one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, offering fast, affordable, and reliable transit for thousands of daily commuters.
The Brampton extension will be advanced as a separate project from the main Hazel McCallion Line, which is already under construction.
“By tunnelling the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton, we’re helping tens of thousands of daily riders connect seamlessly to world-class transit that will extend across the region,” said Premier Doug Ford. “As we continue building the Hazel McCallion Line, expanding GO service, and constructing new roads and highways, including Highway 413, we’re making it easier for Brampton residents to get where they need to go quickly and conveniently.”
Planning and design work for the extensions in Brampton and Mississauga are now underway. As part of this work, various environmental studies will be undertaken through the Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process (TRPAP) anticipated to begin in 2025.
There will be various public engagement opportunities relating to the TRPAPs for these extensions, which will be shared as dates are confirmed.
“As one of the fastest-growing cities in our province, Brampton residents deserve access to world-class transit to meet the needs of a vibrant, thriving community,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Last year, we promised to pave the way for this new priority transit extension, and we’re getting it done.”
The extension will offer key connections to GO Transit, Brampton Transit, Züm, and MiWay routes, helping to reduce congestion and improve commute times. The Hazel McCallion Line is part of a broader $70-billion investment in public transit across the province, aimed at building and expanding infrastructure to keep people and goods moving in the coming decades.
“This is a transformative moment for Brampton,” said Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton. “The commitment from Premier Ford and the Government of Ontario to fund the extension of the LRT into our city is truly a game-changer. It’s a bold step toward shaping a future where Brampton continues to thrive and flourish as a modern city. We are excited to work alongside the province to bring this vision to life.”
