The federal and provincial governments have announced a $41 million joint funding contribution to two housing projects in Oshawa that provide a total of 120 units.
The homes, to be operated by the Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation, will include a mix of unit sizes and “varying levels of affordability,” the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said in a press release.
One of the projects, at 1707 Ritson Road North in the community just east of Toronto, will deliver a 66-unit development of stacked and back-to-back townhouses, with construction slated for completion by the end of the year.
The project is receiving more than $7 million in combined funding through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative and the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative, in addition to a $27.5 million from the federal government’s Affordable Housing Fund.
Also, a second project, Conant Place at 1050 Simcoe Street South, is a 54-unit affordable rental building completed last September. Joint funding for both projects follows a March agreement between Ottawa and Queen’s Park called the Canada-Ontario Partnership to Build that aims to boost housing supply and advance transit projects.
Under the agreement, Canada and Ontario will invest a combined $8.8 billion over 10 years in housing-enabling infrastructure across Ontario, prioritizing municipalities that reduce development charges.
