The Ottawa Hospital has received a $50-million donation from the Peter Gilgan Foundation to support construction of its new hospital campus, marking the largest philanthropic gift in Ottawa’s history.
The donation will support the hospital’s $500-million Campaign to Create Tomorrow, which is raising funds for a new hospital designed to reshape healthcare delivery in the region.
In recognition of the contribution, the the new critical care facility will be named the Peter Gilgan Critical Care Tower.
The tower will house several major services, including the hospital’s Trauma Centre, emergency services and intensive care unit (ICU). It will bring together physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to treat critically ill and injured patients from across the region and beyond.
“The Peter Gilgan Critical Care Tower will strengthen The Ottawa Hospital’s role as a leader in healthcare in Canada,” said Cameron Love, president and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital.
“It will bring together critical care teams, advanced technology and the resources they need to care for some of the most critically ill patients in our region, in an environment designed around the complex needs of patients and their families.”
Peter Gilgan is the founder of Mattamy Homes, Canada’s largest new home construction and development company.
He said access to healthcare is essential to building strong communities and that Ottawa deserves healthcare facilities that reflect the best Canada has to offer.
“I’ve always believed that investing in healthcare is one of the most meaningful ways we can strengthen our communities,” Gilgan said.
“Ottawa is our nation’s capital, and it deserves healthcare that reflects the very best of what Canada can offer. The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to set a new standard for patient care, and I’m proud to support that vision and help make it a reality.”
Tim Kluke, president and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, said the donation will help establish a new standard for patient care.
The Campaign to Create Tomorrow is supporting the development of a new hospital campus intended to provide patients and families with access to advanced healthcare services close to home.
