BRAMPTON – Peel Region has launched the Dixie Area Water and Roads Improvement Project, a major step in meeting Ontario’s housing targets. The project, which is part of a broader initiative to build essential infrastructure for the region’s future, will address the increasing demand for water, wastewater, and road infrastructure driven by a surge in housing construction.
“This large-scale construction project in Brampton will impact residents and road users but is necessary to meet tomorrow’s housing demands,” said Kealy Dedman, Commissioner, Public Works at Peel Region. “By building the enabling infrastructure needed as our community grows, Peel continues its commitment to deliver exceptional water and wastewater services.”.
Provincial housing targets have intensified the need for robust water and transportation systems, with demand for these services increasing at a pace nearly five times greater than Peel’s historical growth. As a result, Peel Region council has approved more than $1 billion in capital investments for infrastructure improvements.
The Dixie Area Water and Roads Improvement Project will focus on upgrading the water and road systems in Brampton. Key components of the include the installation of new watermains, upgrades to water reservoirs, replacement of noise walls along Dixie Road, and road widening with the addition of extra lanes to improve commute times.
As part of the current construction activities, watermain tunnel shaft compounds will be constructed at several locations along Dixie Road. These compounds are critical to the installation of large-diameter watermains, as tunnel-boring machines will dig deep underground to facilitate this work.
