New Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital breaks ground on major expansion project

Ontario Construction News staff writer

Construction has officially started on the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, a transformative expansion that will replace the existing Mississauga Hospital with a 2.8‑million‑square‑foot facility—triple its current size—to serve an estimated 2.2 million residents of Mississauga and Peel Region.

The new hospital will become the country’s largest teaching facility, featuring one of Ontario’s largest emergency departments and a dedicated Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children.

Plans include a 22‑storey tower housing 350 new private beds—bringing the total to over 950—nine new and 14 enhanced operating rooms, advanced diagnostic imaging, a high‑capacity NICU, pharmacy and lab facilities, and upgraded infection prevention systems.

The project is being completed under a progressive public-private partnership model. The construction lead is ED+PCL Healthcare Partners, a joint venture between EllisDon and PCL Constructors Canada, working alongside Infrastructure Ontario, Trillium Health Partners, and the Ministry of Health

Site preparation is already underway, with demolition of older buildings, relocation of utilities, and creation of temporary roads to clear the footprint for the main build.

When completed, the hospital will add approximately 2,400 health-care workers and 400 physicians, significantly boosting capacity for cancer care, cardiac surgeries, mental-health services, and emergency treatments. Completion of the build is expected in 2033, with operations transitioning in 2034

Key highlights:

  • Size and scale: 2.8 million sq. ft., 950+ beds, 23 operating rooms, expansive ER.
  • Specialized hub: Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children with one of the province’s largest NICUs.
  • Workforce boost: +2,400 health-care staff, +400 physicians.
  • Timeline: Site prep underway; completion by 2033; operations begin 2034.
  • Contractor: ED+PCL Healthcare Partners (EllisDon and PCL joint venture)

This project marks a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure that aims to shape the region’s health-care delivery for decades to come.
