Restoration of West Whitby Pier beginning January

Ontario Construction News staff writer

The federal department of fisheries and oceans will launch construction on the West Whitby Pier as soon as Jan. 1 and repairs are expected to be completed by spring 2022.

Work includes demolition, removal and disposal of the 27-metre section of the damaged concrete deck. Workers will then re-align the damaged sheet pilings that support the pier.

Next, crews will install new tiebacks and wales, fill voids with rock and pour a new cement pier.

The project began in July 2021. An environmental survey concluded in August found the project, “is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects,” per the Ministry.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada said in a statement that they are satisfied the work is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

In the 2021-2022 budget, the Government of Canada committed an additional $300 million to be invested over two years for the renewal of Canada’s network of small craft harbours.
