The University of Waterloo has started construction on the Waterloo Eye Institute (WEI). This new center of excellence, part of the School of Optometry and Vision Science, aims to redefine vision research, optometric education, and patient care.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our region’s history,” remarked Dr. Stanley Woo, director of the School of Optometry and Vision Science. “The Waterloo Eye Institute will play a pivotal role in tackling the pressing issue of eye disease in Canada by leveraging our research capabilities to innovate solutions and provide expert care to our community.”

With 68,000 sq. ft. of new and renovated space, the WEI promises to expand its reach, offering vital services to patients of all ages. Dr. Stanley Woo emphasized the urgent need for accessible eye care, citing that one in five Canadians is at risk of losing their sight due to various eye conditions.

The institute, expected to be completed in two years, will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research at Waterloo. It will harness expertise in biomedical sciences and ocular imaging to advance early diagnosis and treatment for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, glaucoma, and diabetes.

“The WEI exemplifies the University of Waterloo’s commitment to applying research strengths for global and local benefit,” noted Vivek Goel, President and Vice-Chancellor of Waterloo. “It addresses the escalating demand for specialized care while integrating insights across disciplines to solve complex health challenges.”

The School of Optometry and Vision Science has already secured $27.5 million towards its $35 million fundraising goal, with notable contributions from organizations like FYidoctors and IRIS, alongside individual donors and regional support.

“The region proudly stands behind the Waterloo Eye Institute,” said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo. “This institute is poised not only to enhance local patient care but also to become a national leader in education and research.”

The site will feature modernized patient care facilities, including an updated optical dispensary designed to maximize natural light and streamline patient flow.
