Smart Home Designs Niagara will showcase its approach to accessory dwelling unit (ADU) and tiny home construction at an open house Oct. 17 in Jordan Station.

The HCRA-licensed builder is opening its facility at 4301 Jordan Road to the public for tours of completed model homes and demonstrations of construction methods used in its smaller residential buildings.

“Visitors can tour our model homes, meet our team and learn how Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and tiny homes can provide flexible living arrangements for multigenerational families, aging parents, adult children and rental opportunities,” the company said in a statement. “Our team will be available to discuss the entire building process, from zoning and custom design to permits and construction.”

The open house at 4301 Jordan Road in Jordan Station includes a VIP hour from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a public open house from noon to 2 p.m.

Admission is free for the public portion of the event, while registration is required for the VIP hour. Click the link to register: https://share.hsforms.com/10frZckwpRSGEbicQeKJOpQc6ej3

The event will feature models incorporating structural insulated panel (SIP) construction, energy-efficient building envelopes and customizable floor plans.

Smart Home Designs Niagara says the open house is intended to provide an opportunity to see how smaller residential structures are designed and constructed, while also providing information about the regulatory and construction process involved in developing ADUs.

That process can include zoning approvals, servicing requirements, permitting, design and construction, all of which can affect the feasibility and cost of a secondary dwelling.

ADU projects are designed for a range of applications, including additional housing for multigenerational families, independent living space and rental accommodation.

The Oct. 3 event will also provide an opportunity for visitors to speak with members of the Smart Home Designs Niagara team about the construction process, from initial design through permitting and completion.

Using SIP construction is one of the distinguishing features of the company’s buildings. Structural insulated panels consist of an insulating core sandwiched between structural facings and can be used to create energy-efficient building envelopes while allowing for relatively rapid assembly.

“We want to highlight the important role that Accessory Dwelling Units can play in creating more flexible housing options across Ontario,” officials said. “Whether it’s helping aging parents live close to family, providing independent living space for adult children or creating rental housing, ADUs offer homeowners opportunities to make better use of their existing properties.”
