The Township of Springwater held a groundbreaking ceremony this week for a new fire station being built in Midhurst. The new fire station will be located at the municipality’s Community Hub property, along with the new County of Simcoe paramedic services post. The new fire station is estimated to be completed by spring 2026.

Township council voted in October to approve an additional $1,628,950 to build the station at 1132 Snow Valley Rd. after terminating a contract with the lowest bidder, Berkim Construction Inc. of Etobicoke, worth $7,649,852, plus HST.

“They gave us a price of $7.7 million and they can’t build the facility for that amount of money,” Springwater chief administrative officer Jeff Schmidt told BarrieToday.

Pegah Construction Ltd. was the second-lowest bidder, with a best and final offer of $9,250,627.49, plus HST and the contractor agreed to honour its original bid.

The new fire station, designed by Masri O Architects, will feature a four-bay apparatus area, support and vehicle maintenance sections, administration and training spaces, and residential areas, including a day room, kitchen, fitness space, and washroom facilities.

“As we break ground on this new fire station, we’re not just constructing a building; we’re laying the groundwork for enhanced safety and preparedness in our community.” said Mayor Jennifer Coughlin. “We are proud to see our ongoing efforts materialize into a state-of-the-art station, ensuring a safer tomorrow for all of Springwater.”

“The new station will be a cornerstone of public safety, equipped to meet the evolving needs of Springwater for over 40 years,” said Jeff Kirk, Director of Fire & Emergency Services. “With facilities for our firefighters, this station will be more than a response point—it will be a place where training, administration, and community support come together.”
