Sudbury women in construction group launches

Ontario Construction News staff writer

A new organization aimed at supporting women working in the construction industry has launched in Sudbury.

Sudbury Women in Construction (SWIC) held its inaugural event Aug. 6, bringing together women and industry allies for a noon-hour barbecue in the city’s east end.

The group was founded by Joan Strawn, health and safety coordinator at Damisona Group and former chair of the Women in Construction Committee of the Northeastern Ontario Construction Association.

SWIC’s goal is to promote safer, more respectful and inclusive workplaces while supporting women across all trades and roles in the construction sector. The organization also plans to raise awareness about workplace harassment and violence and the contributions women make to the industry.

The group’s inaugural board includes Strawn as president, Holly Baril as vice-president, Angèle Dmytruk, Jessica Folz and Laurie Davis, representing a range of roles within the construction industry.

SWIC’s first major event will be a golf tournament planned for this fall.
