Texting pilot keeps residents updated on construction projects

The Region of Waterloo is using text updates to share timely information about road construction with residents as part of a pilot project.

Text updates are available for two construction projects: Bleams Road and Fountain Street/Maple Grove Road. Residents can text 57555, and in the message, type BLRD (for Bleams Road) or FNST (for Fountain Street/Maple Grove Road) to receive updates. Within seconds, information on the project will be provided, including a summary of the construction improvements, timing, road closures, lane restrictions, detours, and a website link for more details.

“The Region of Waterloo has nearly 30 road construction projects on the go that will improve how we move across the region,’ said Colleen James, Regional Councillor and Chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee. “We understand road construction can impact our daily commute; this texting pilot is a way to track and measure if sharing construction information in the moment will help residents navigate construction and keep updated on projects.”

Signs are installed at both construction locations with the text number and message ID. Users are asked not to text and drive; use hands-free with voice commands or wait until they can safely text to receive the information.
