Construction is underway on a $3.3-million modernization project at Timmins Victor M. Power Airport, with Timmins-based G&S Enterprises Ltd. leading the first major phase of upgrades aimed at improving the passenger experience and accommodating future growth.
Timmins City Council awarded G&S Enterprises the approximately $3.38-million construction contract earlier this year following a competitive tender process. The project includes expanding the airport’s departure lounge, renovating the security screening area and modernizing the terminal’s exterior façade.
The airport will remain fully operational throughout construction, although travellers can expect temporary changes to terminal access and departure procedures.
The work marks the first significant phase of improvements identified in the airport’s master plan, which is designed to support projected passenger growth, improve accessibility and enhance passenger circulation during busy travel periods.
To minimize disruptions, construction is being completed in stages while airport operations continue. Portions of the curbside parking lane will be temporarily closed to accommodate exterior work, and taxi and shuttle pick-up and drop-off locations may change as construction progresses. Airport officials say signage will be in place to direct motorists and passengers.
Inside the terminal, a temporary wall has been installed within the existing departure lounge to facilitate the expansion, while safety fencing surrounds the construction area outside the building. During the current phase of work, all departing passengers will use a single gate, with airport staff and directional signage available to assist travellers.
Timmins Victor M. Power Airport serves as a key transportation hub for Northeastern Ontario. According to the Airport Master Plan, passenger traffic is expected to increase by approximately 1.1 per cent annually over the next several years.
City officials say the planned investments will help ensure the airport continues to meet future demand while supporting regional connectivity, business development and tourism across Northeastern Ontario.
