The City of Vaughan has marked the completion of the Kirby Road extension while breaking ground on another major road project aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity.
The $65-million Kirby Road extension between Bathurst Street and Dufferin Street was officially completed as the city continues to implement its council-approved Nine Point Action Plan to Fight Traffic Gridlock.
The completed roadway features four lanes, a new bridge over East Patterson Creek, multi-use pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, new lighting, intersection improvements at Bathurst and Dufferin streets and new streetscaping.
“With a total investment of $65 million — including $45 million from the City and $20 million from the federal government, this project showcases what strong partnerships can achieve,” Mayor Steven Del Duca said at a news conference.
The extension will improve connectivity and reduce congestion in the growing community.
Meanwhile, the city has begun work on another project identified under the Nine Point Action Plan, with a groundbreaking held Aug. 28 for the Bass Pro Mills Drive extension.
The project will extend Bass Pro Mills Drive between Highway 400 and Weston Road, creating a new east-west connection for residents, businesses and visitors.
The city says the extension will provide an alternative route to help ease congestion on Rutherford Road and surrounding corridors while supporting future growth.
The project will include infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and other active transportation users.
“This groundbreaking is such an important step forward,” Del Duca said. “The Bass Pro Mills Drive Extension project was a commitment I made as Mayor right from the start, as part of the Nine Point Action Plan to Fight Traffic Gridlock.”
Ward 3 Coun. Rosanna DeFrancesca said the extension will improve connectivity and reduce congestion in the community.
The Bass Pro Mills Drive extension is expected to be completed in 2030.
