The City of Vaughan is building a new “state‑of‑the‑art” Animal Shelter at 10401 Dufferin St.

The new animal shelter will replace the current location at 70 Tigi Crt. and provide a modern, purpose‑designed space that supports the health, safety and well-being of pets and their owners. It will serve as a central hub for animal care, adoption and community engagement in Vaughan.

Designed by Unity, the new two-storey, 25,275 sq.ft. facility is being built on the Maple Nature Reserve in Vaughan, a 43-acre naturalized site on the Oak Ridges Moraine. The design considers the flow of animals through the shelter, from intake to adoption, and ensures proper segregation based on health, temperament, and species to ensure the health and safety of animal occupants.

Mayor Steven Del Duca described the project as part of Vaughan’s “responsible growth and thoughtful city-building” strategy, while Ward 4 Councillor Chris Ainsworth said the new shelter would provide “more effective spaces for staff and volunteers.”

“Once complete, the new shelter will provide much‑needed long‑term support for animal health and well‑being for years to come” he said. “I also want to recognize staff for the compassionate work they do every day to care for animals in our community.”

Construction is expected to start later this year, beginning with the demolition of the existing building on the site, followed by the design of the new animal shelter, bringing the facility to life.
