Whitby enters final phase of public engagement for new comprehensive zoning by-law

Ontario Construction News staff writer

The Town of Whitby is gearing up for the final phase of public engagement in developing a new comprehensive zoning by-law, a crucial document aimed at guiding land use and development across the community. This initiative will consolidate the town’s three existing zoning by-laws into a single, streamlined document that aligns with modern zoning practices and adheres to provincial, regional, and local policies.

The city will host two community open houses:

  • 13: 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Whitby Town Hall (575 Rossland Rd. East)
  • 18: 7 to 8:30 PM at Brooklin Community Centre and Library (8 Vipond RRd.ad)

Each session will feature a presentation by SGL Planning and Design, followed by a Q&A period on the proposed draft.

“This new zoning by-law will not only make it easier for residents and developers to access information, but it will also help ensure that Whitby develops sustainably as our community continues to grow,” according to a town news release.

The current engagement phase follows two earlier phases where residents shared their thoughts on key directions for the draft by-law. The feedback from the upcoming sessions will be instrumental in finalizing the document, which is slated for council approval in 2025.

Materials from the presentations will be available online after the sessions at connectwhitby.ca/InTheZone.

The aim is to create a comprehensive framework that addresses residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural development considering all types of land use throughout Whitby, excluding the Brooklin expansion area..

To participate, register for the open houses or fill out an Interested Party form to stay informed about future meetings and preserve appeal rights to the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT).
