The Town of Collingwood’s Affordable Housing Task Force (AHTF) is hosting a Community Conversation Series: Collingwood Talks Housing, beginning Sept. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. The first session will explore the theme “Why Can’t They Just Build it? Developers Tell All” and will take place at Collingwood Public Library (55 Ste. Marie Street), Community Rooms B & C, 3rd floor.
“Increasing the supply of affordable housing is critical to the well-being of our community,” says Jack Vanderkooy, chair of the Collingwood Affordable Housing Task Force. “The Collingwood Talks Housing series provides an opportunity for community members to engage with industry experts—not only to learn about the housing challenges we face, but to explore solutions that are already within reach.”
The session will feature a panel discussion with two local developers, who will answer questions following their presentations.
“Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing developers and municipalities, as well as practical tools to engage in conversations about development and affordable housing,” Vanderkooy said.
Attendees can expect to:
- Engage in meaningful dialogue
- Connect with like-minded neighbours
- Learn from industry leaders and experts
- Collaborate on solutions for affordable housing
- Contribute to a compassionate and inclusive Collingwood
The AHTF’s goal is to foster a deeper understanding of affordable housing through solution-focused discussions. The series launched successfully during YIMBY (Yes, In My Back Yard!) Week in May, where participants explored ways to shift community conversations from opposing growth to supporting affordable housing initiatives.
There is no fee to attend, but registration is required for planning purposes. Please register by visiting the Affordable Housing page of the Town’s website.
Additionally, the AHTF will host a film screening of Thinking Beyond the Market on Oct. 3, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at the Simcoe Street Theatre. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director, Dr. Brian Doucet. The film highlights real housing projects, policies, and initiatives from across the country. More information will be shared as the event approaches.
