The construction industry lost more than 45,000 jobs across Canada in January, according to an ADP Canada National Employment Report.

Across the country in all sectors, more than 231,000 jobs were lost in January.

The report, which is derived from ADP payroll data, measures the change in total non-farm payroll employment each month on a seasonally-adjusted basis.

January 2021 Report Highlights:

  • Total Canada Non-farm Payroll Employment -231,200
  • Manufacturing -17,900
  • Construction -45,400
  • Natural Resources and Mining -1,700
  • Trade/Transportation and Utilities -62,600
  • Finance/Real Estate -5,900
  • Leisure and Hospitality -55,100

“January reported a decrease in jobs, the largest decrease since May 2020 during the lockdown period,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP. “The surge in COVID-19 cases and public health restrictions resulted in mass layoffs. Job losses were reported in every sector, led by trade, transportation and utilities; leisure and hospitality; and construction.”
