Construction is underway on a new 160-bed long-term care facility on the grounds of the H.J. McFarland Memorial Home in Prince Edward County.

Located on Main Street in Picton, the new site is expected to be completed in 2027. The home will feature private rooms, vibrant resident areas, and a range of therapeutic and recreational amenities, including a hair salon, lounge, gallery, gardens and walking paths.

“This much-anticipated redevelopment will provide for dignified care and comfortable living in Prince Edward County, close to families and the community,” Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp said in a statement.

The project is receiving support through Ontario’s Construction Funding Subsidy top-up, part of the province’s plan to modernize long-term care by adding new capacity and replacing outdated facilities. As of June 2025, the province says 147 projects — representing nearly 24,000 new and redeveloped beds — are either completed, under construction or approved to proceed.

“This new long-term care home will ensure seniors in Prince Edward County get the right care in the right place,” said John Jordan, parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Long-Term Care. “Once completed, 160 residents will have a new modern, comfortable place to call home.”

The design creates a home-like environment through smaller, more intimate spaces. It will provide nursing and personal care services, as well as supports for diet, recreation, and spiritual well-being.

“This is an exciting milestone for the future of long-term care here in Prince Edward County,” said Mayor Steve Ferguson. “More private rooms and modern facilities will significantly enhance the experience for our residents.”

The redevelopment is part of Ontario’s broader plan to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province. The province says it is also introducing a new construction funding program to support developers and taking steps to accelerate projects through land sales and hospital partnerships.
