The City of Brampton has taken a major step toward expanding local healthcare services by donating land for the city’s first-ever hospice, a 12-bed residence operated by Kay Blair Hospice.

Members of Brampton City Council and the Kay Blair Hospice Board gathered recently for a ceremonial signing to mark the contribution, which will support end-of-life care in a homelike setting and help free hospital beds at William Osler Health System for patients needing acute care.

“The addition of a hospice in Brampton means residents will have access to compassionate, local end-of-life care in a setting designed for comfort, dignity, and support for families,” said a city spokesperson. “It also strengthens hospital capacity by providing an appropriate alternative for patients who no longer require acute care services.”

The new facility will be staffed by trained personnel and volunteers, offering hospice services at no cost to individuals. It will reflect Brampton’s cultural diversity and the values of dignity and comfort that inspired Kay Blair’s community work.

The project builds on a 2022 request from Kay Blair Hospice, when its representatives presented to city council the need for local hospice services. Council approved the request and directed staff to advance the proposal. The city has now committed nearly 1.7 acres of municipally owned land at Countryside Drive and Bramalea Road for the hospice.

Kay Blair Hospice is continuing to secure capital funding and finalize the facility’s design, which will include space for family support and community programming, including bereavement services.

The development aligns with provincial planning for additional hospice beds and supports the broader goal of providing compassionate end-of-life care close to home.

Named in honor of community leader Kay Blair, the not-for-profit organization is governed by a dedicated board of directors and volunteers committed to equity and humanity in healthcare and housing.
