Canadian building permit values drop 4 per cent in November

Building permit values across Canada dropped four per cent to $10.9 billion in November, with decreases in all building types.

Eight provinces reported monthly gains in residential construction permits, however, the total value of residential permits across the country fell 2.8 per cent to $7.0 billion with large losses in British Columbia, 19.4 per cent) and Quebec, 17.3 per cent.

Residential permit valued across the Atlantic provinces jumped 30 per cent to $421.8 million – the biggest monthly value for the region in 2023. Prairie provinces also showed the highest monthly level with a 9.8 per cent gain.

Ontario was up 2.1 per cent, reaching $3.0 billion.

However, the value of non-residential permits dropped 5.8 per cent in November, with all three building types falling.

Permit values in commercial building have been falling since a record high in March 2023. In November, permits issued totaled $1.7 billion – a 16.2 per cent drop over the past year.
