Ontario builders now have access to cement-free, decarbonized concrete blocks, as Canal Block Français has begun production using CarbiCrete technology at its Port Colborne facility.
CarbiCrete’s patented process replaces cement with a steel-making by-product and permanently mineralizes carbon dioxide into the concrete, eliminating 100% of cement-related emissions. An ASTM-verified environmental product declaration (EPD) confirms that CarbiCrete construction blocks have a carbon footprint 20 times lower than the industry average.
Canal Block is the first Ontario manufacturer and the second in Canada to license CarbiCrete’s technology. The blocks combine reduced environmental impact with durability, fire resistance and energy efficiency, according to Canal Block president Durk Bylsma.
“We’re thrilled that builders in Ontario can now purchase CarbiCrete blocks to lower embodied carbon in their construction projects,” said Jacob Homiller, CEO of CarbiCrete. “Canal Block and the Bylsma family have a long history of manufacturing sustainable building products, and we’re excited to have them as partners as we advance our mission to make concrete a climate solution.”
The expansion follows CarbiCrete’s recent announcement that POINT.P, a Saint-Gobain brand, will open a production line in Hauts-de-France in 2026. CarbiCrete blocks are also available in Quebec through Patio Drummond and in the northeastern United States through Gagne & Son.
