Clarington has started construction on the long-awaited South Bowmanville Recreation Centre.

The former Bowmanville Indoor Soccer Centre is being transformed into a multi-sport destination that will expand recreational opportunities for people of all ages. The revamped facility will continue to support popular local sports while introducing new amenities to serve the growing needs of the community.

Phase 1 will include:

  • A FIFA-sized multi-sport dome with an indoor walking track
  • Two FIBA-sized basketball courts adaptable for net sports such as pickleball, tennis and volleyball
  • A refrigerated outdoor skating trail, designed for year-round events including summer markets
  • Multi-purpose rooms for recreational programming such as yoga, strength training and kids’ programs

“What an incredible milestone this groundbreaking is! We’ve been working towards this for so many years, and now our plans for the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre are becoming very real,” said Mayor Adrian Foster. “The excitement from residents is palpable, and it’s truly gratifying to see this vision come to life.

“A big thank you to our Clarington council and staff, whose commitment has made this possible. We’re getting things done, and it’s an exciting time for our community.”

Phase 1 is scheduled to open in 2026. Plans for Phase 2 include an Aquatics Centre to meet the demand for swimming space, as well as additional multi-purpose rooms to expand wellness and recreation options.

MJMA Architecture & Design is leading the design of the $37-million Phase 1, which also includes extensive site improvements such as landscaping, a new road and an updated intersection on Baseline Road. Access to Clarington Fields will remain open throughout construction, with parking and entry available via Green Road.

The South Bowmanville Recreation Centre is set to become a hub for sports, wellness and community activities, with anticipation building as construction progresses.
