Canada’s construction industry says Ottawa’s new list of priority infrastructure projects is a step in the right direction but stresses that follow-through and industry consultation will be critical.

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) said Thursday it welcomed the Major Projects Office (MPO) announcement that certain large-scale projects will receive expedited approvals and priority status. But the association emphasized that what matters is choosing “shovel-worthy” projects that support long-term economic growth.

“We have been advocating for the reduction of red tape and greater investment in national, shovel-worthy infrastructure projects for many years,” said Rodrigue Gilbert, president of the CCA. “We can always find projects to build, but we must prioritize those projects that will move the needle for our economy.”

The association has long pressed Ottawa to adopt the Canadian Trade Infrastructure Plan (CTIP), a blueprint for upgrading road, rail, port and marine assets to support supply chains and future growth. The inclusion of trade-focused projects in the MPO’s announcement marks progress, Gilbert said, but he added that government and industry must continue working together.

“Today’s announcement further highlights the role our industry plays in supporting Canadians’ everyday lives, enabling the national economy, and bolstering supply chains,” Gilbert said.

The CCA said it will push for more consultation to ensure the MPO’s work leads to investments that deliver measurable results for the economy and communities across the country.
