Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor) has announced $612,000 to help the Municipality of Markstay-Warren, 40 km east of Sudbury, expand and upgrade infrastructure and provide water services to existing businesses.

“This is an investment in the future of the Municipality of Markstay-Warren, the Nickel Belt region and all of Northern Ontario,” said Nickel Belt MP Marc Serre. “Important infrastructure investments such as these help to generate jobs and stimulate local economies and pave the way for long-term prosperity throughout the region.”

Funding through the federal government’s Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP), will allow work to run the existing water main underground approximately 600 meters along Kukagami Lake Road from Highway 17 to its anchor tenant and provide a local business with access to a reliable water source that is needed for its future expansion plans.

New water infrastructure will help meet the local goal to diversify the Kukagami Lake Road area for future industrial development as outlined in their economic development strategic plan. Three new jobs will be created and an additional eight maintained as a result of the expansion project.

“Today’s funding announcement is a welcome show of support for our community and will allow the municipality to extend municipal services to new businesses in the area,” said Mayor Ned Whynott, Municipality of Markstay-Warren. “This investment from FedNor will create more economic growth opportunities for the people and businesses in the Markstay-Warren area, and supports our long-term economic diversification strategy.”
