Goodyear Canada this week announced a $575 million plan to modernize and expand its plant in Napanee into an energy-efficient, comprehensive manufacturing process and boost production capacity, including for EV and all-terrain tires.

The expansion will help Goodyear’s Napanee plant achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, contributing to Canada’s goal of a net-zero economy by 2050. The modernized plant aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 10% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

“Goodyear Canada’s commitment further strengthens Ontario’s burgeoning electric vehicle sector,” Premier Doug Ford said. “This builds on the billions invested in the sector over the past four years. Ontario’s strong transportation infrastructure, competitive business environment, and skilled workforce make it the preferred choice for major investments.”

Goodyear Canada Inc. will receive up to $44.3 million in federal funding from the Strategic Innovation Fund for the expansion. The Government of Ontario, through Invest Ontario, will contribute $20 million to support key project components, including innovative technologies and skills training programs.

“This investment underscores our long-term commitment to Canada and enhances our ability to meet evolving customer needs,” said Mark Stewart, CEO and President of Goodyear. “We appreciate the support from federal, provincial, and local governments and are proud of our Napanee team’s role in shaping the future of tire manufacturing.”

Construction will take place on the same site as Goodyear Canada’s existing Napanee facility.

Founded in 1898, Goodyear is a leading global tire manufacturer with approximately 71,000 employees across 54 facilities in 21 countries.

“Partnering with Goodyear Canada propels us to the forefront of the clean economy,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. “This investment in tire technology will create high-quality jobs and significant economic benefits, advancing our commitment to a sustainable automotive sector.”
