Graham to build $475 million Ryerson University campus building in Toronto

Ontario Construction News staff writer

Calgary-based Graham Construction says it has been selected as the general contractor to complete a new $475 million Ryerson University campus building in Toronto.

A parking lot at 202 Jarvis St. at the eastern end of Toronto’s downtown will be turned into a 44-storey, 52,500 sq. m. structure.

Graham will participate in an Integrated Product Delivery (IPD) team with Zeidler Architecture and Henning Larsen Architects.

The building will have a 13-storey podium with classrooms, labs and other institutional space. The 29-storey tower above the podium will be a residence for about 600 students. There is a small commercial space included in the building plans.

The new tower on a university-owned site has been in the planning stage for several years. It is currently moving through the rezoning process.

The Request for Proposals issued last December says Ryerson plans to complete the project’s validation phase by the fall. Graham estimates the building will be completed in 2025.

“With our strong IPD experience, we will provide construction integration services and ultimately act as the contractor and constructor for the project,” the contractor said in an April 21 statement. “As part of the IPD team, we will help establish and maintain a working environment of mutual respect and trust; engage in active collaboration, and problem solving; and generate innovative, set-based design solutions to drive maximum value to the project and client.”
