A new 336-bed student residence at Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus has officially opened, showcasing a groundbreaking approach to sustainable construction and design. This state-of-the-art facility addresses the urgent need for student housing amid Ontario’s ongoing housing crisis, while enhancing the overall campus experience with a vibrant hub for student life.

The residence, part of the inaugural phase of the Humber Cultural Hub (HCH), exemplifies Humber College’s commitment to integrating sustainability with academic excellence. Designed by Diamond Schmitt and constructed by EllisDon, the building is a significant achievement in both educational and environmental innovation.

“Humber’s new residence fulfills a critical need for student accommodation, offering a supportive environment that will help our students thrive academically and personally,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, President and CEO of Humber College. “This facility embodies our dedication to providing an exceptional student experience and creating a community where lifelong friendships and cherished memories can flourish.”

The HCH residence sets new standards in environmental sustainability, featuring mass timber construction sourced from renewable forests.

This choice of materials not only captures and stores carbon but also replaces traditional high-carbon building materials like cement, brick, and steel.

The building eschews natural gas in favor of geothermal, solar, and electric energy sources, aligning with Humber’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions across all its campuses.

“Our government is dedicated to collaborating with postsecondary institutions to develop innovative solutions for increasing student housing across the province,” said Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges and Universities. “Humber’s new residence ensures that students have access to affordable, safe, and well-equipped housing that supports their educational journey.”

Certified as a zero carbon building by the Canadian Green Building Council (CAGBC), the HCH residence adheres to the highest industry standards, including the Toronto Green Standard and platinum-level LEED certification.
