Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca says if he is elected Premier on June 2 he will designate Highways 11 and 17 as Class 1 highways.

Del Duca made the announcement at a campaign stop in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

For Northern Ontario, the designation would mean strict standards for maintenance, inspections three times every seven days and snow removal equipment deployed when 2.5 centimetres of snow has accumulated.

Repairs including potholes, road cracks and shoulder drop-offs would need to be repaired more quickly.

On Monday Del Duca visited communities hardest hit by the weekend storm, including Uxbridge, talking about his party’s climate plan that would:

  • Invest $250 million each year in restoring and expanding natural infrastructure
  • Provide interest-free loans for climate-resiliency renovations
  • Retrofit schools, hospitals, colleges, universities, social housing and other public sector buildings
  • Plant 800 million trees over eight years
  • Update the Ontario Building Code to meet leading climate-resiliency standards
  • Strengthen the powers of Conservation Authorities

“The climate emergency is happening now, and families are increasingly paying the cost of Doug Ford’s climate inaction,” Del Duca said, adding that he would “get Ontario back on track as a climate leader after four years of Ford Conservatives’ neglect.”
