RICHMOND HILL — Construction has officially commenced on The Village of Westbrook Lane, a new 240-bed long-term care home located at 11300 Yonge Street in Richmond Hill. This project is part of Ontario’s broader initiative to add 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province.
Addressing rising construction costs, the province is providing a Construction Funding Subsidy. Introduced in 2022, this subsidy offers eligible long-term care projects an additional $35 per bed per day for 25 years, with extra supports available for non-profit operators. The Westbrook Lane facility will benefit from this subsidy.
The facility is designed with a “main street” concept on the ground floor, featuring a library, community centre, hair salon, chapel, and other amenities. Above, eight resident home areas will provide dining and living spaces for up to 32 residents each, fostering a more intimate and community-oriented environment. One of these areas will be dedicated to memory care programming, and another to specialized physical care. The building will also be fully air-conditioned.
Ontario’s Minister of Long-Term Care, Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving long-term care services. “Our government is fixing long-term care by getting shovels in the ground and ensuring residents can get care where and when they need it,” she stated.
In addition to expanding care capacity, Schlegel Villages plans to incorporate a “living classroom” within the facility for Seneca Polytechnic students. This initiative will provide hands-on training opportunities for personal support workers and other health professionals.
The development is expected to open in 2027.
