The City of Mississauga has exceeded its annual energy conservation targets, marking another milestone in its long-term sustainability strategy as it works toward the goals outlined in its Five-Year Energy Conservation Plan.
According to the 2025 Annual Energy Report, overall energy consumption across corporate buildings was reduced by 2.6 per cent in 2025, more than double the annual reduction target of one per cent. Also, a 3.5 per cent reduction was recorded in greenhouse gas emissions, reflecting continued investments in cleaner technologies and energy-efficient infrastructure.
Officials say the results demonstrate steady progress in modernizing municipal facilities, improving operational efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
“Mississauga has already made meaningful progress in advancing our goal of cutting greenhouse gases by 80 per cent by 2050,” said Mayor Carolyn Parrish. “Our investments in cleaner, more efficient technologies and innovation are helping to not only reduce our environmental impact but also strengthen our local economy and create a healthier, more sustainable future for Mississauga.”
Initiatives completed in 2025 include installation of heat pump systems, hybrid boilers and electrified water heating systems at City facilities. Mississauga also expanded its use of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and incorporated solar-ready infrastructure into municipal projects. Also, the electric vehicle charging network was expanded to more than 170 connections.
The improvements are part of Mississauga’s broader effort to build a more resilient and environmentally sustainable community while lowering long-term operating costs.
“Surpassing our energy and emissions targets reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability,” said Raj Sheth, Commissioner of Community Service. “While a 2.6 per cent reduction may sound modest across all City buildings, it’s the equivalent of cutting the energy use of hundreds of homes and significantly reducing our environmental footprint.
“Through infrastructure modernization and investing in cleaner technologies, we’re reducing emissions and improving the long-term performance and resilience of our facilities.”
