Twelve participants have graduated from the Skills2Advance Construction program, completing industry-recognized training designed to prepare workers for careers in the skilled trades while helping address labour shortages across the Grand Erie region.
The 10-week program, delivered at Six Nations Polytechnic in Brantford, provides introductory training in welding and carpentry with a focus on modular home building. Participants also complete an eight-week work placement with a local employer, providing practical experience that can lead to full-time employment.
Several graduates have already secured jobs in the construction industry, while others are preparing to begin careers with local employers.
As part of their capstone project, the graduating class partnered with the Children’s Safety Village of Brant to repair and repaint the replica Brantford & District Labour Centre building, build new benches and refurbish picnic tables that will be used by children visiting the site.
Graduates earned a range of industry-recognized certifications, including a Canadian Welding Bureau MCAW/FCAW Flat Position Welding Qualification, a Certificate of Completion micro-credential, forklift operator certification, Standard First Aid with CPR-C, Elevated Work Platforms, Working at Heights and occupational health and safety training.
The Skills2Advance Construction program is one of three workforce development initiatives aimed at increasing the supply of skilled trades workers in the region. Combined with its Industrial Trades and Home Building programs, the organization expects to graduate more than 100 participants this year.
Program organizers are encouraging employers seeking trained, job-ready workers to connect with the Skills2Advance team to learn more about current candidates and upcoming graduates.
The program is supported through partnerships with Six Nations Polytechnic, Conestoga Brantford Campus, Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie, Kiwanis Club of Brantford, Children’s Safety Village of Brant, and the Brantford and District Labour Centre.
