BRACEBRIDGE – The Muskoka Lumber Community Centre has received the 2025 Parks and Recreation Ontario Award of Excellence for Facility Design.

Opened in August 2024, the 113,000-sq. ft. structure combines a multi-sport fieldhouse, NHL-sized arena, public library and flexible community event spaces, all connected by a central public concourse.

The centre was designed by MJMA Architecture and Design and built by Aquicon Construction Ltd. Site preparation and enabling works were completed by Fowler Construction.

The design emphasizes natural light, warm wood finishes, universal accessibility and flexible spaces intended to adapt to changing community needs. Energy-efficient systems and sustainable materials were incorporated to support long-term operational efficiency.

More than $17 million in federal and provincial funding supported the project. A community sponsorship campaign raised more than $4 million, while local fundraising initiatives also contributed to regional health-care causes.

“Since opening, the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre has become one of Bracebridge’s most active and meaningful gathering places,” Mayor Rick Maloney said. “The design has given the community a vibrant hub that strengthens social connections and improves quality of life for residents of all ages.”

The award recognizes the town’s approach to people-focused municipal infrastructure and integrated community facility design.
