GERALDTON – The Ontario government is providing up to $500,000 to support early planning for the redevelopment and renovation of the first floor at Geraldton District Hospital, officials announced Wednesday.

The funding is part of a $60 billion provincial initiative for more than 50 major hospital projects across Ontario over the next decade, aimed at expanding access to high-quality care.

Geraldton hospital will use the funding to redevelop about 9,300 square feet of existing space, allowing for expanded programs and services to meet community needs. Planned upgrades include a dedicated entrance for outpatient services, a new CT diagnostic program, a telemedicine suite, and improved infection prevention through separation of acute and ambulatory programs.

“By supporting the redevelopment of Geraldton District Hospital, we are making it faster and easier for more people and their families to access world-class hospital care in their community, for generations to come,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

The hospital, located near the gateway to the Ring of Fire, is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to support Northern communities while unlocking the economic potential of the region.

“I am grateful for the dedicated staff and local partners who continue working to ensure residents have dependable, high-quality care close to home,” said Kevin Holland, MPP for Thunder Bay-Atikokan.

The Ministry of Health will work with the hospital to finalize planning, including determining programming, operational needs, and space requirements. Once the plan is complete and construction contracts are awarded, a timeline for construction will be confirmed.

Geraldton District Hospital serves about 5,700 residents across five communities and four First Nations. The provincial government also plans to provide $257 million in 2025-26 for critical infrastructure upgrades at hospitals and community health-care facilities across Ontario, a 12.3 per cent increase from the previous year.

Jamie McPherson, mayor of Greenstone, said the redevelopment is “a vital step toward ensuring that families across Greenstone and our Northern communities have access to high-quality, modern care close to home.”
