Ontario Construction News staff writer
The Ontario Industrial Roofing Contractors Association (OOIRCA) has launched a search for a new executive director as long-time industry leader Don Marks plans to retire at the end of 2026.
The association said the role offers a unique opportunity to lead a well-established organization representing Ontario’s unionized industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) roofing sector, working at the intersection of industry leadership, labour relations and member engagement.
OIRCA is seeking candidates with strong leadership experience, business acumen and a solid understanding of construction and labour relations. The association is encouraging those interested, or who know qualified candidates, to come forward or share the opportunity within their networks.
Marks’ retirement marks the end of a career spanning decades in Ontario’s roofing industry.
He spent much of his early career in the ICI sector, including six years with a prominent Ontario-based roofing products distributor before founding Guardian Roofing Products Inc.
Operating out of Toronto, Guardian played a key role in introducing major U.S.-based manufacturers to the Canadian market, including Firestone Building Products. The company later became a representative and distributor for Carlisle SynTec Systems, helping advance the adoption of single-ply roofing systems in Canada.
Marks also expanded Guardian’s product line by importing fibreglass roofing felts and polyisocyanurate insulation from the Celotex Corporation, making the company the first stocking distributor of polyiso insulation in Ontario.
In the latter part of his career, Marks transitioned to the not-for-profit sector, leading OIRCA and focusing on advancing the interests of its members while raising the profile of the roofing industry.
He has also served on several boards and industry committees, advocating for the sector across the province.
Among his notable achievements, Marks helped guide the launch of Rooftop Rescue, a charitable foundation that provides roofing services to individuals and organizations unable to afford necessary construction work.
