The Ontario government has awarded Stantec Consulting Ltd. the detailed design contract for a new two-lane bridge to replace the aging Little Current Swing Bridge, the sole road link connecting Manitoulin Island to the mainland.
The new structure will replace the 110-year-old one-lane swing bridge on Highway 6. In addition to two traffic lanes, the design includes a pedestrian walkway and a dedicated bike lane. The crossing serves as a vital connection for residents, businesses and visitors, carrying as many as 4,500 vehicles a day during peak summer months.
The project is part of Ontario’s $30-billion transportation infrastructure program, which includes investments to expand and modernize highways and bridges across the province. Northern Ontario accounts for about 60 per cent of Ontario’s road network, with nearly 11,000 kilometres of highway.
Industry stakeholders say the new bridge is not only critical for regional connectivity but also a significant opportunity for Ontario’s construction and steel sectors.
“The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction applauds the Ontario government for its continued investment in critical infrastructure,” said Keanin Loomis, president and CEO of the institute. “Awarding contracts for design work to Canadian companies plays a vital role in supporting the Canadian steel industry and our local economies. We further encourage designers to collaborate with Canadian fabricators and steel mills to support local work and ensure projects are completed on time.”
The province completed planning, preliminary design and an environmental assessment for the project in September 2023. With Stantec now advancing the detailed design, procurement and construction phases are expected to follow, although no schedule has yet been released.
