The Ontario government has announced more than $9.5 million to support infrastructure renewal in the City of Peterborough. This funding, part of the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF), will be available in 2025 and is included in the province’s $190 billion capital plan.
Member of Provincial Parliament Dave Smith stated that this funding will help municipalities plan for essential infrastructure projects. Mayor Jeff Leal noted that it will address key needs in the city, particularly in the downtown area.
In total, the Ontario government plans to allocate $400 million in OCIF funding for 2025, benefiting four hundred twenty-three small, rural, and northern communities across the province. This funding can be accumulated over five years for larger projects.
Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of supporting smaller communities in Ontario, highlighting the expected economic benefits.
The OCIF provides funding specifically for municipalities with populations under 100,000, rural and northern municipalities, and Local Services Boards managing water or wastewater systems. Funding amounts are based on community needs and economic conditions.
This investment aims to enhance local infrastructure and support the construction industry in the region.
